Lockheed management Essay

We examined the decision to invest in the Tri-Star project by forecasting the cash flow associated with the project for a volume of 210 planes. We also asked what a valid estimate of the NPV of the Tri-Star project at a volume of 210 planes as of 1967 would be. We found this to be -$584 M. This was clearly an unacceptable NPV for capital budgeting on the project. A break-even analysis revealed that the project reached economic break-even with the production of 275 planes at $12.5 M per unit but did not reach value break-even at that level of production. Despite industry analysts predicting 300 units as Lockheed’s break-even sales point, at this level, net present value remained insufficient to cover costs at negative $274 million. If the company had performed a true value break-even analysis, management would have realized that roughly 400 Tri Star aircraft (about 67 per year for six years) costing somewhere between $11.75 million and $12 million per unit would have to be sold in order to break even. The investment decision made by Lockheed to pursue the Tri Star program was not a reasonable one. A true value analysis shows that at the production level of 210 units, the project would result in an economic loss of $584.05 million and a profit loss of $480 million. In addition to miscalculating the break-even level of production, Lockheed management overestimated the growth rate of air travel industry.

hurricanes essays

hurricanes essays The second part of our report will be about hurricanes. A hurricane is an intense tropical low-pressure area with winds that are 120 kilometers per hour or greater. Hurricanes are also called tropical cyclone or typhoon. The most damage a hurricane does is when the storm surges hits. Storm surges are currents. They form when the hurricane piles up water along the shore and then blows it inland. They are much more damaging during high tide. Hurricanes grow larger and more powerful from the vast amounts of energy that go into them by condensing water vapor. Unlike a tornado hurricanes have no fronts. The middle of a hurricane is called the eye. The eye of the storm is usually 15 to 150 kilometers in diameter. However because the air in the eye in sinking there is no rain. There is almost no wind either. The eye is surrounded by intense thunderstorms called the eye wall. When you are in the eye of the hurricane you may think it the storm is over but then the other side of the hurricane hits. You may think the storm is over in the eye because there is no wind or rain and the sky may even be blue. The winds in a hurricane get stronger as they go into the center of the hurricane and they are most violent just outside of the eye. When A hurricane is fully growing it is about 650 kilometers in diameter with winds about 120 miles per hour. Unlike a tornado a hurricane can last for days at a time. They die out because they lose moisture. That is the hurricanes main need. Hurricanes require the upwelling of warm and moist air for them to keep on going. This report helped us learn more about hurricanes and tornadoes that we didnt know before. It told us things that were very interesting and that we would never now unless we did this report. ...

Example University of British Colombia Admission Essay

Example University of British Colombia Admission Essay Free Online Research Papers Example University of British Colombia Admission Essay The mission statement of Johnson North Secondary School has provided me the unique opportunity to gain the qualities necessary to be a successful educator. Being a senior student, I was inspired by many teachers and school staff members to give back to the school and community. I believe my experiences working with students through the JNSS mentorship and leadership programs have contributed to the fulfillment of the JNSS mission statement for reaching young students and giving them the opportunity to become exemplary citizens in and out of the school community Currently, I am an executive member of Johnson North’s Students’ Council and Fine Arts Council as well as the Grad Council Chairperson. As an executive member of all these council I work closely with students and staff to organize numerous school-wide events. I am also the Presidents of JNSS Amnesty International and one of the more recent projects that I carefully organized was the 1st Annual Amnesty International Film Festival. Apart from serving others, I also believe in education and I have had successfully finished four dynamic 1st year University level Advanced Placement courses, Biology, Psychology, Macro and Micro Economics in grade 11 and I am currently enrolled in History of Arts Advance Placement. Moreover, I believe in the value of community service and as a volunteer, I have devoted many hours to the Canadian Aids Society, Canadian Downs Syndrome Foundation, as well as the Canadian Kidney Foundation. Just before the winter break of 2006, I spearheaded the 1st Annual Amnesty International Film Festival at JNSS. The Film Festival is a week long event, where two films related to human rights were featured each day in our school gallery. The executives worked closely with the regional director of Amnesty International of Canada and with the support of the staff from the school and the dedication of club members and volunteers, the events was a tremendous success. Through our work, we were able to give students from all grades an opportunity to learn about human rights and make them understand the values and rights that all people are entitled to. Political and social issues such as those facing Tibetans in China, the aftermath of the chemical explosion in Bhopal, India, conflict diamonds in African nations, and the travesty in North Korea, were some of the topics that were covered at our film festival. What fascinated me was the sense of good-will that radiated amongst the students. In a concerted effort to create awareness in our community, we were able to ensure the tremendous success of the event. I am always striving to help other students create and achieve their goals. My leadership at Johnson north has always been accomplished through taking action and helping others. I have been involved in my school’s Grade 8 Mentoring program where senior students are assigned five juniors and I acted as a positive role model for the elementary students in making the leap to high school. My genuine concern for the world’s problem has inspired me to become a high school science and social studies teacher. My endeavor to assist students has not only helped them to reach their full potential, but also allowed me to continue my life’s ambition to be a positive influence on my society and the University of British Colombia. Arnold Palmer Hospital Supply Chain

Arnold Palmer Hospital’s Supply Chain Case Arnold Palmer Hospital is one of the nations leading hospitals for women and children. It is located in Orlando, Florida, and is apart of a national purchasing group. Even though being apart of the purchasing group has some advantages, there are also many disadvantages. These disadvantages forced the hospital to change its supply chain strategy. After leaving this group the hospital along with several other hospitals from the group formed their own smaller, but still powerful group, Healthcare Purchasing Alliance. The company saved its members $7 million in the first year with two main changes. First, it was structured and staffed to assure that the bulk of the savings associated with its contracting efforts went to its eight members. Second, it struck even better deals with vendors by guaranteeing a committed volume and signing not 1- year deals but 3- to 5- year contracts. There are several issues facing the Arnold Palmer Hospital (APH) that led to the revising of the supply chain strategy. The main reason for the revision of the strategy was because of the frequent changing of products every year by the purchasing group, because of lower cost bidders. Another reason for the change in strategy is the fact that the purchasing group drops products that are familiar or preferred to APH, and stocked products that were not famili ar to the physicians at the hospital. The final reason the case stated that the hospital changed its strategy was because the buying group was not able to negotiate contracts with local manufacturers to secure the best pricing.Because APH left the large purchasing group and formed their own group they were able to save their members $7 million, even though they had an internal cost of $400,000 to run HPA the savings and ability to contract for what the member hospitals really want makes the business a good one. The reason that Arnold Palmer Hospital’s strategy differs from a manufacturing firms strategy is because an effective supply chain strategy in manufacturing focuses on development of new product innovations and efficiency through buyer-vendor collaboration, where-as the approach in a service industry has a slightly different emphasis.Because APH is a service industry it focuses more on the people side of the supply chain. Using the people who actually use the product and taking their input when buying the objects. The alternative to the problem with the purchasing group would be to do exactly what APH did, leave the group. Although instead of forming their own group they could have joined another group in the area. With them forming their own group they can set their own rules, and regulations, and if they had joined another group they would have had to conform to the already set rules and regulations. I believe that the best alternative that they could have chosen was forming their own purchasing group. That way they can do what was best for them, their patients and their employees, and the other hospitals in the group. They can come up with their own rules and regulations, who they wanted their supplies from, and who to negotiate contracts with.

How can project managers reduce the risk of project failure describe Essay

How can project managers reduce the risk of project failure describe and relate tools and concepts. Illustrate with examples - Essay Example The risks can comprise problems of parts superiority and material; stoppages in delivery of adequate resources to convene project requirements; budgetary and workers transforms; and, imperfect research or knowledge of the project manager. These risks lead speedily to holdup in release dates and financial plan overages that can be harshly weaken assurance in the development of the project management (Martin et al, 2004). There are lots of risk those are attached to the project development and cause a serious problem for the better management and administration of the project. These risks are also the main reasons for the failure of the most of the projects. At project management viewpoints, project managers have to find out the most recent insights, methods and developments in project management field. This will provide him a better understanding regarding the efficient project management and solutions for emerging risks (Johnson et al, 2005). A lot of projects would be unsuccessful for the reasons of declining behind timetable, cost overruns and so forth. Such type of risks can be decreased, if the project manger has good qualities of project risk finding. If a project manager is able to identify the main stakeholders and makes sure that they evidently make out the project scope and main objects of the project. What we can do to diminish the project failure risk? As I have accessed a solid step project managers are able to acquire to augment the accomplishment of all their projects: is the process of enhancing the skills of their team members (Martin et al, 2004). By means of making sure that the project development and management group is properly capable/ trained previous to start a multifarious project. This is very best way through which project manager can be able to significantly diminish the project cost; augment project effectiveness and risk of project collapse predominantly in high-risk projects. So we can say that a project

Equalization in Canada verses Equalization in Australia Essay

Equalization in Canada verses Equalization in Australia - Essay Example Equalization is one of four major federal transfer programs. The others are the Canada Health Transfer, the Canada Social Transfer, and the Territorial Formula Financing (the main source of revenue for territorial governments). Equalization is the federal government's main device for reducing fiscal inequalities between the 'have and have-not' provinces (Mapleleafweb). The grant to receive equalization funding is calculated by a formula assessing each province's revenue raising ability against a five-province standard. Presently eight Canadian provinces receive equalization: Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and Saskatchewan. This program is the Canadian government's most important initiative for reducing fiscal discrepancies between provinces (Equalization Program). Equalization payments allow less prosperous provincial governments to offer their residents public services such as hospital fees, electricity, water and other basics that are comparable to those in other provinces and at similar taxation levels. Each province receives unconditional equalization payments. ... For 2005-06 eight provinces are expected to qualify for $10.9 billion in equalization entitlements. The provincial governments may spend the equalization money they receive in any way they desire, unlike conditional transfer payments such as the Canada Health and Social Transfer. The equalization payments guarantee equal levels of health care, education, and welfare in all the provinces. Equalization payments do not involve payment transfers from wealthy provinces to poorer provinces. Instead the federal treasury provides the funds for these payments. In other words, for example, a wealthy citizen from a poorer province like New Brunswick, pays more into equalization than a poorer citizen in wealthy province like Ontario. Since Ontario has a bigger population and wealth, the citizens of Ontario as a whole pay more federal taxes and therefore their total contribution in equalization payments is greater than that of New Brunswick. Equalization payments also aid by encouraging national unity. Quebec, the most populous of the poorer provinces, is the largest single beneficiary of the payments. 70% of the 10 million Canadians of the poorer provinces reside in Quebec when British Columbia and Saskatchewan are removed. The history of Equalization dates back to Confederation and the Constitution Act of 1867. Two basic principles that Canada's founding fathers based the separation of legislative powers: 1) The central government must retain much of its revenue generating power for the purpose of building railroads 2) 'Coordinate federalism' in which provincial governments act independently and autonomously within predefined powers and must be the basis for the division of powers between provinces and the central government. The great

Scientific Method Applied to Forensic Science Paper Essay

Scientific Method Applied to Forensic Science Paper - Essay Example The scientific method is applied to forensic science to help forensic scientists gather needed evidence to come to a conclusion about a criminal event. Though it follows the same basic ideas and techniques as the original tried and true scientific method, forensic science has their own tweaked version of the method, which is as follows: observation and description of a phenomenon, or a group of phenomenon; formulation of a hypothesis, or hypotheses, to explain the phenomenon; use of the hypothesis to predict the existence of other phenomenon, or to predict quantitatively the results of new observations; â€Å"performance of experimental tests of the predictions by several independent experiments (James, 2009)†. These methods aid forensic scientists in the solving and understanding of the events of criminal investigations. The first step in the forensic scientific method is to observe and describe phenomenon or a group of such. The forensic scientist needs to be able to understand what they are seeing when they are viewing the crime scene and the evidence that they inspect. â€Å"If they describe it wrong or relay the information incorrectly, they will botch the experiment, thus botching the investigation and lessening the chances of solving the crime accurately (Braswell, 2007)†. They have to focus on the entire crime scene, taking in every bit of information that they can and making note and taking pictures of the totality of the scene. The recording of what they find allows them to look back at everything later, giving them the chance to find new evidence that they overlooked during the initial inspection. They have to look at the scene as a whole, breaking the scene up into smaller sections to further their collection of evidence and comprehension of the crime scene. With closer inspection, they can begin to understand what did take place, so all
